Your first visit

The first visit is free of charge so that you can learn about your treatment options with no financial obligation. Your initial visit to our office is very important to us. It gives us the opportunity to get to know you and determine what you hope to accomplish with your smile.

For your first visit, please take time to complete the patient information forms, which are available for download here. By completing these forms prior to your arrival, we can begin your first visit without delay.

Medical and dental histories are taken, and Dr. Utley will perform an orthodontic evaluation. If treatment is needed, you may be offered the option of having diagnostic records taken. These records include radiographs (x-rays taken with advanced digital technology), digital photos of the teeth and face, impressions of the teeth, and a clinical examination.

Dr. Utley will explain all treatment options personally and answer all questions you may have. After any questions concerning orthodontic treatment are answered to your satisfaction, we will further explain procedural details, such as appointment scheduling and fee structures. A customized letter, detailing the fee for treatment, insurance benefits, and payment plan options will be prepared for you.

We do not believe in pressuring you or demanding a decision immediately regarding your treatment. Dr. Utley wants to make sure that you fully understand your options and have time to discuss the treatment with your family.

After you and Dr. Utley decide on a treatment plan, the appointment when you get your appliances (like braces) usually takes from one to two hours. You will then see us at regular intervals, about every 6 weeks apart for adjustments, which typically take from 20 to 40 minutes. The length of the treatment will vary depending on severity, but typically lasts 18-24 months.
